Labioplasty

Your Guide to Having Labioplasty Surgery

Understanding labioplasty

Vulval labioplasty (also known as labiaplasty) is a surgical procedure to reshape or reduce the size of the labia minora (the inner lips of the vulva). It is usually performed for one or more of the following reasons:

  • Functional: Discomfort during physical activities, exercise, or sexual intercourse.
  • Aesthetic: Concerns about the appearance of the labia.
  • Medical: Irritation, chafing, or hygiene-related issues.

It’s important to understand that there is a wide range of normal when it comes to vulval anatomy. If you have concerns about your appearance or symptoms, a consultation with a specialist can help determine whether labioplasty is appropriate.

Reasons to consider labioplasty

Labioplasty may be considered if you are struggling with:

  • Persistent discomfort when wearing tight clothing or during exercise
  • Labial tissue becoming caught or twisted during daily activities
  • Recurrent irritation or inflammation
  • Difficulty with hygiene or urinary stream direction
  • Psychological or emotional distress related to labial appearance

Who is suitable for labioplasty?

Labioplasty is suitable for adult women who:

  • Have fully developed genital anatomy
  • Experience physical or emotional symptoms related to labial size or shape
  • Are in good general health
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome

It is not recommended for individuals under 18 except in exceptional circumstances.

What does the procedure involve?

Labioplasty is typically performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of the procedure and patient preference.

There are different techniques used, including:

  • Trim technique: Excess tissue is trimmed and the edge sutured.
  • Wedge technique: A wedge-shaped portion of tissue is removed, preserving the natural edge.

Sutures used are dissolvable, and the procedure usually takes between 1 and 2 hours.

Recovery and aftercare

  • Immediate aftercare: Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal and can be managed with pain relief and cold packs.
  • Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry; warm saltwater baths may be advised.
  • Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise, cycling, or sexual intercourse for about 4–6 weeks.
  • Follow-up: A review appointment is usually scheduled within 1–2 weeks.

Most patients return to normal daily activities within a few days, but full healing may take 6–8 weeks.

Risks and complications

Like any surgical procedure, labioplasty carries some risks:

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Scarring or asymmetry
  • Changes in sensation (temporary or permanent)
  • Dissatisfaction with cosmetic result
  • Need for revision surgery

Your surgeon will discuss these risks with you in detail during your consultation.

Emotional and psychological aspects

Labioplasty can have a positive impact on self-confidence and body image, especially when symptoms have affected your quality of life. However, it is not a solution for broader issues related to self-esteem or body dysmorphia. A psychological assessment may be recommended in some cases to ensure the decision is well-informed and in your best interest.

Is Labioplasty available on the NHS?

In most cases, labioplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not funded by the NHS. Exceptions may be made for severe functional problems.

Will it affect my sexual sensation?

Most women report no change or improved comfort during sex after recovery. However, any surgery in the genital area carries a small risk of altered sensation.

Can I have children after labioplasty?

Yes. Labioplasty does not affect fertility or the ability to have vaginal deliveries.
